Quick update on the Unimog for those keeping score.

The Mog has been out of commission for a couple years due to several things, but mostly general slacking on my part.

Quick rundown of the issue: she would run decently at idle, but would backfire and quickly stall out under any load. My initial (and likely faulty) guess was to replace the points with civilian electric ignition system. Once that was installed correctly, the same problem existed, so got the carb rebuilt.

Time to install it and see what happens.

Here she is when she arrived (hanging out with her mutually bug-eyed little buddy):

I am dangerous with a wrench, so my buddy Bert is taking the lead. I'm the helper. Bert is a meticulous man and prefers to do things the correct way, as opposed to my method - the quick way. As such, we started at the gas tank and worked our way forward. We cleaned and cleared and verified until we were sure the fuel system is intact an working.

We then verified we were getting spark. Done.

Time for the carb. Installed that sucker and got the Mog fired right up! Didn't sound to hot, but were able to maintain idle with out much trouble. The carb, though, is leaking like a sieve, so back to the bench with it. Bert is rebuilding it this weekend.

With the engine work out of the way for the day, we started tinkering with the shifting. The main gear shifter wasn't working. The lockers weren't shifting. So we decided that for ease of access, we'd take off the back bed (plus I've been wanting to do that for years).

Here she is, topless..bottomless? Whatever:

Oooo, she is looking svelte. From another angle:

For the curious, on the far left is the battery box, which houses two 12V batteries connected to run 24V. The two tanks about the red gas tank are, yup, dual tanks.

Now that we had easy access, lubing up the tranny was a piece of cake.
Here is a shot of a tranny:

What you are looking at here is the back of the transmission. Right in the center, the lever that splits into two..that's the parking brake. To the left of that is the linkages for the locker. There are lots of nifty springs and levers and such that all needed lube. In the bottom right hand corner is the brake master cylinder, I believe.

Figured out that I had forgotten how to shift this beast (the "direction lever" which controls forward-neutral-reverse has to be in F or R to get the main shifter to shift). Now everything is shifting smoothly.

Hopefully will have everything together and running in short order! Will update.

If you want any pictures of the Mog, let me know. It's neat.

It's not very long. In the first pic, it's next to a 4Runner...it may be a foor longer? Take off the bed and it's even shorter.

According to this, it's 4925. I think the measurement is in corn kernels or something.

I'm down here in Atanta, GA, so prices will vary. I got a great deal and got mine for $3500. I see them for $7-$8K, for a base one like mine. All decked out? $30K.

The jealousy I have right now would fill an Olympic-size swimming pool and five smaller residential swimming pools.

That is total badassness! What is your plan to do with it once it's up and running?

I just found out I have a neighbor that buys surplus US military trucks. They are mainly this m900 series trucks made by AM General. Anyways he sells them and mods them anyway his customers would like. Business is great right now for him because of all the doomsday preppers and zombie apocalypse types. He told me added a v shaped snow plow for pushing "debris" out if the way.

Keep us posted on the progress of this project.. It is very much exciting
